BASIC WEIGHT TRAINING:
My first suggestion to anybody interested in weight
training is to see your family Dr first and get his
approval. now that that disclaimer is over(he-he),
lets get to work.
1. Find a gym to train at.
This is very important because this will make or break
you. I suggest a place that is close to your home or
work. studies show that one is more likely to blow
off a workout if it is to far away.
Find a place that you feel comfortable in. Some gyms
can be very intimadating for beginners ans you must
shop around. consider it like buying a car. Ask for
a free week to see if you will like the atmosphere and
the equipment.
Ask if they have day care and the hours of opperation.
Just because they claim to have day care, does not
mean it is uop and running when you need it.
2. Decide on a great training time for you and work
it into your day. You might have to wake up earlier
or reschedule your normal day to fit it in. But trust
me, it will be worth it.
3. Sign up for an orientation class if the gym offers
it. Most gyms offer this class to new members. It is
a great time to become familiar with the gym's
equipment.
4. Start slow!!
Many new athletes want to give 100% the first week and
it kills them. When I train a new client, I start
slow and with light weight. You do not want to be so
sore that you end up hating the entire workout idea
and never come back. Rember, it takes hard work and
patience. Many people think they can do it all over
night. These are the same people who "burn out" and
quit after 2 weeks.
5. Give it time
Anything becomes habit after 2-3 weeks(good or bad).
so hang in there. You will be sore and tired but the
first month is the hardest and then it really grows on
you.
6. Get your body fat tested if they offer it at the
gym. You cannot go by the scale. Muscle weighs more
then fat so you might not loose a ton of weight.....
but your body is changing. The feel of your jeans on
yopur body or body fat testing are two ways I monitor
my imrovement.
7. Figure out a workout plan
You can hire a personal trainer to help with this or
you can do it youself. There are so many training
plans out there. You just have to find one you like
and that fits with your schedule.
Ask yourself:
a. how often can I train
b. how much time can I give to this(be realistic)
c. what do I enjoy doing(cardio/free
weights/machines/yoga/boot camp/etc)
d. do I want a training partner
e. do I have any injuries(back/shoulder/etc)
There is so much information at your finger tips! All
you need is a computer and some time to browse. Some
